Structured to the ADA Guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students — the standard most state dental boards look to when approving a moderate sedation course.
Western Surgical and Sedation's IV Moderate Sedation Certification is built to the ADA Guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students (adopted by the ADA House of Delegates, October 2025) and the companion ADA Guidelines for the Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia by Dentists. Those guidelines are the reference point most state dental boards use — and that some adopt by reference outright — when deciding whether a moderate sedation course qualifies an applicant for a permit: a minimum of 60 hours of instruction, supervised individual administration of moderate sedation for at least 20 patients, certification of competence in the sedation technique and in rescuing a patient from a deeper level than intended (airway management, IV or IO access, and reversal medications), a participant-to-faculty ratio no greater than four-to-one during clinical instruction, and certification of each participant's competency by a qualified course director.
